When you have curly hair, people automatically think you have lots of volume, but it’s not necessarily true.
If you have fine hair or long hair, getting volume at the roots can be tricky. If however, you don’t like the volume, it can be quite challenging as well.
In today’s blog, we’re going to discuss ways to achieve volume and ways to reduce it.
How To Achieve Volume
Achieving volume doesn't have to be difficult. You just need to use the right products and methods. We've compiled a list of some great tips to you can add to your hair toolbox.
-
Use volumizing products.
If your stylers aren’t giving you the boost you need, you may need to start using lighter products.
Our clarifying shampoo can help clean your hair and remove residue build-up. It contains botanical extracts that will also that can boost hair bounce. Plus, it delivers light moisture to keep your locks looking healthy.
Our Light Creme Gel provides both volume and a light hold without weighing your hair down.
If you want to create volume at your roots, use our Alcohol Free Hair Spray. Just put some on a hair pick and then fluff away.
Another great way to add volume is to use a mousse or foam. They are perfect for an effortlessly volumized look without the heaviness.
To do this:
- Work a volumizing mousse or foam into your roots to create lift.
- Then, rake or smooth through to your ends to help define your curls.
- If you need more hold, scrunch a small amount of styling gel to your ends (this will also help to prevent frizz).

-
Clip/Clamp at the roots.
Whether you diffuse or air dry, metal clips or roller jaw clamps are great tools to create more volume at the root area.
Use either the metal clip or roller jaw clip to hold curls up at the root and away from the scalp.
Once your hair is dry, remove the clips or jaw clamps and massage your roots with your fingers.
-
Diffuse for body.
If you have fine hair, diffusing will help add volume to your curls and help them look better than if you let them air dry.
- When diffusing, hold your head to one side then the other to help curls dry away from the scalp.
- Make sure your roots are completely dry because damp roots will get weighed down and leave your curls looking flat at the crown.
- Once your hair is dry, remove the diffuser attachment and use the air from the dryer to blow your curls around a bit to create volume.
- Try diffusing your hair upside down. By using a diffuser and holding your head upside down, you can add volume at the root area.
- You can also try letting your hair air dry half-way.
- To help lift the roots, blast it with a little heat, and finish off with the cool air to set it.

-
Pick it.
To create height, lift a section of your curls with your hand and pick in an upward motion to fluff the curls underneath, staying close to the scalp.
Avoid using a pick on the top layer of your hair or picking through the ends, which will create frizz.
-
Choose the right cut.
A hairstyle that’s all one length can weigh down your curls. Visit a professional curly stylist, who can reshape your hair to create a fuller, more balanced look, and to form a style that’s not too flat on the top or too bulky at the ends.
-
Change the part in your hair.
Most people part their hair in the same place, whether it's out of habit or simply because it's easier to style it that way.
The longer you wear your hair one specific way, the more you weigh it down. By not allowing the hair to fall in the same position every day, your roots are upright and “breathing.”
If you change this to the other side of your head, you’ll instantly get a boost at the roots and oomph to your style.
To create hold and help keep the style (form) in place, try spraying the roots with our alcohol- free hairspray.
Ways To Reduce Volume
- Try not to concentrate product at your roots.
Volume in hair begins at the roots. When applying a styling product to your hair, focus more on the mid-shaft and ends of your hair. Alternatively, finish with our gel for hold.
- Diffuse downward.
If you plan on using a diffuser, opt for drying your hair downward, but make sure to also focus on drying your roots down flat.
This technique will help smooth your curls down since you’re drying your hair in the direction you want it to fall.
Once your hair is completely dry, give your curls a blast of cool air to "close" the hair cuticle, as this will also help prevent frizz.
- Skip the fluffing.
When styling your hair, use a finishing product like oil to smooth it down, rather than fluffing up the roots. The goal is to keep curls relaxed and not encourage them to frizz even more.
- Use a shampoo and conditioner that tames frizz.
Frizz is another reason why you’re probably having a hard time taming the volume of your curls.
Opt for a shampoo and conditioner that can help control frizz and fights against humidity like our Medium Moisture Shampoo, followed by our Super Smooth Cream Conditioner.
